Welcome to the web site for

The Passenger Pigeon Society

www.passengerpigeon.org

This year marks the 100 year anniversary of the last Passenger Pigeon authenticated in the wild. Therefore, why not make this year even more special as the first year of the beginning of

THE PASSENGER PIGEON SOCIETY.

During the last several months I have communicated with countless numbers of people interested in the Passenger Pigeon. Everyone express an interest in this organization. Many were very surprised that one did not already exist. Well, every organization has to have a beginning, and there not a more appropriate time like the present, to begin the first PASSENGER PIGEON SOCIETY.

We believe that many people for many reasons would be drawn to such an organization. Naturalists, bird lovers, environmentalists and anyone who loves the outdoors & U.S. history would be potentially interested in such a society. It would be an excellent way to educate people, not only about the history of Passenger Pigeons but also make people more aware of the problems of extinction in general.

When most people think of extinction, they seem to think of the Amazon rain forests and the plight of animals in places like Africa. However in truth most people don't realize that extinction can happen practically in your own backyard. That is what happened with the Passenger Pigeon!

What will The Passenger Pigeon Society do?

Well for starters the society would have an informative publication with:

  • Articles that commemorate the memory the Passenger Pigeon. There is a wealth of literature on the subject that many of us would never see otherwise.
  • Articles about plight of birds that are endangered, threatened or nearly extinct in elsewhere in world today.
  • Articles by researches in the US working with endangered bird species.
  • Proposed Projects that the PPS will sponsor or support, to restore the knowledge we have lost about Passenger Pigeons in the US. (for example bringing Martha out of her dark corner in the Smithsonian into a more appropriate place of honor)

Time, effort and interest will be needed to organize the society and produce its first publication, and that is my current plan. Once the society has a suitable membership we will be able to explore the societies direction and goals.
